Peace Engineering - New Mexico Dashboard Case Study

Peace Engineering is the application of STEAM principles, sustainable practices, cultural sensitivity, and innovation to promote and support peace. It recognizes the important contribution that engineering, the sciences (social and physical), and other disciplines such as law and finance, working together, make toward a world where prosperity, sustainability, security, transparency, and diplomacy, and where a culture of equity and quality thrive. As an outcome of the WEEF-GEDC 2018 Global Peace Engineering conference, the University of New Mexico School of Engineering created an undergraduate minor in Peace Engineering comprising 15 hours of coursework, open to all disciplines, to collaboratively address global challenges and to educate “street smart” professionals of all disciplines. A principal goal and tool for Peace Engineering is verifiable trusted data, essential for making decisions. The Dashboard presented in this paper is the outcome of a final project of the ENG 220 (Engineering, Business, Sustainability, Ethics, Society, and Justice, Equity, Diversity, Accessibility, Inclusion) class in the Peace Engineering Minor program at UNM. Fifty-four undergraduate students participated, with 6 teams working in Water, and 4 in Air Quality, Health, and Finance/Economics. The Dashboard is an ongoing project that provides verifiable trusted data to community members and decision makers.
