The New Engineering Education to Face Industry 5.0 Challenges

The shift from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0 indicates a human-centered, sustainable, and resilient workplace, emphasizing the integration of human factors into industrial systems and work processes. This paper examines how universities must redesign engineering programs to prepare students for the Industry 5.0 era, integrating advanced technologies with human-centric skills. The methodology involved a non-systematic mapping of literature and a cross-case synthesis of the main initiatives of ten universities in the United States, Latin America, and Europe, focusing on successful practices in engineering education. Two primary research clusters were identified: Industry 5.0 Challenges and Sustainable Socio-Economic Development. Findings suggest that universities with innovative, interdisciplinary engineering programs supported by global higher education associations are better positioned to meet Industry 5.0 requirements. This study underscores the importance of an interdisciplinary and holistic approach to engineering education, which is essential for addressing the complex demands of Industry 5.0.
