Design and application analysis of arithmetic logic unit in digital systems

This article consists of five important parts. Introduction, fundamental theoretical analysis of Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU), Verilog coding and simulation, the application of ALU, conclusion. At the beginning of this article, the author will introduce the definition of ALU, ALU working principle & advantage and drawback and the development history of ALU. Besides, the author will show eleven screenshots of the code about design an 8-bit ALU with 9 functions, testbench and divider. After that, the article will illustrate the application of ALU. For example, ALU is applied in microprocessors and digital signal processors (adder and half adder) and three shifters (shifter for multi-channel selection switch, barrel shifter, logarithmic shifter). Finally, conclusion part will summarize the whole article. Through previous work up, the author's understanding of digital logic principles and practical implementation techniques has been enhanced. The experience gained will lay a solid foundation for addressing more complex digital design challenges in future academic and professional environments. The work in ALU design reflects the author's proficiency in digital logic and circuits, setting benchmarks for future projects and applications.
