Sustainable and Cost-Effective Design Principles for a Safer and More Efficient Machine

This article presents the principles of sustainable and cost-effective design of technical equipment, or rules for building a safer and more efficient machine. Increasing the safety of machines and reducing their energy consumption are among the fundamental pillars of sustainable development of the whole society. The key to achieving increased machine safety and reduced energy consumption in the production process is the application of standardised procedures and established standards. There are constantly increasing demands for the improvement of machines in terms of their features and functions, aimed at increasing productivity and quality of work, flexibility, safety and reducing the consumption of the energy resources involved. Addressing the issue of machinery safety is in line with the EU Strategic Framework on Health and Safety at Work. Energy efficiency is potentially the biggest contributor to all three European energy policy, namely environmental sustainability, competitiveness and energy safety.
