Operational Assessment of the Remote Tower Concept

The remote tower is a current trend in air traffic management. Many providers of air navigation services in Europe and around the world are testing, implementing, or even already operating this concept. This paper focuses on the operational assessment of the Remote Tower concept in the context of Slovak international airports. The Slovak international airports of Piešt’any (LZPP), Poprad-Tatry (LZTT), and Žilina (LZZI) are airports with fewer movements and therefore also with low revenues. In the future, Remote Tower could be a solution for these airports by reducing investment and operating costs, increasing the quality of services provided, or extending opening hours. This article is devoted to the operational solution of control towers and their possible introduction at Slovak civil airports. The main goal of this paper is an operational assessment of the suitability of implementing remote tower technology at selected regional airports in Slovakia.
