Interoperability of Air Quality Monitoring Systems Through the oneM2M Standard

Machine-to-machine (M2M) communication enables devices and systems to have autonomy, data exchange, and analysis. A use case for M2M communication is air quality monitoring (AQM) wherein IoT sensor networks are deployed to make informed decisions on environmental sustainability. Challenges on scalability and interoperability limit any AQM system's ability to aggregate localized data points and generate a broader view of an area. This project enhances the capability of UP Center for Air Research in Urban Environments (CARE), an established AQM research program, by standardizing its overall system and aligning it with the global oneM2M standard. The project implements an AQM system in the oneM2M standard where Wi-Fi, LoRa, and Zigbee legacy devices that collects air quality data to be standardized and sent to the oneM2M server. Overall, the AQM system achieved 0.14% average retransmission, 356.8ms maximum end-to-end latency, and 99.5% data reliability in server downtime.
