FinFET Based Low Power and High Speed 3-Stage Comparator

This article presents a novel three-stage comparator design that effectively addresses kickback noise, a major difficulty in comparator circuits, while achieving high speed and low power consumption. The design makes use of FinFET technology. Kickback noise can provide inaccurate outputs, which can affect analog-to-digital converters' (ADCs') accuracy. A CMOS input pair has been used in the amplification stage to reduce the kickback noise because kickback noise component generated by NMOS is cancelled with that of PMOS. An additional signal path has also been considered at the regeneration stage which increases the speed of signal processing and reduces the input referred offset and noise to a larger extent. NMOS transistors, as opposed to conventional PMOS transistors, are used in the regeneration step, which speeds up comparator design and optimizes the performance. The significance of these design decisions to improve comparators' overall performance is emphasized throughout the study, especially for high-speed applications where kickback noise can negatively impact output accuracy. This research greatly advances the field of electronic circuit design by utilizing the benefits of FinFET technology and putting into practice efficient noise reduction approaches. This will pave the way for future developments in high-speed, low-power devices that are more dependable and efficient.
