Engagement and Effectiveness of HyFlex Learning: Insights from a Malaysian Private University

The HyFlex learning model, which allows students to choose between in-person and remote attendance, has gained prominence in higher education, particularly in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This flexible learning approach accommodates diverse student needs, making it an appealing option for institutions seeking to maintain educational continuity. This study explores the perspectives of undergraduate students at a private higher education institution in Malaysia regarding HyFlex learning, with a focus on student engagement and the perceived effectiveness of various HyFlex modalities used in an elective university course. Using a quantitative research design, data were collected from 121 participants through an online survey. The findings revealed high levels of student engagement, particularly in regular attendance and motivation to achieve good grades, with multimedia resources and assessment methods receiving high effectiveness ratings. However, areas for improvement were identified, including peer interaction and instructor consultations. Gender differences in collaborative behaviors and note-taking practices were also highlighted, underscoring the need for tailored engagement strategies. This research significantly contributes to the understanding of HyFlex learning in the Malaysian context and offers valuable insights for institutions refining their pedagogical approaches. By supporting flexible, inclusive, and equitable education, this study aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), which advocates for lifelong learning opportunities and accessible, high-quality education for all students. Through the HyFlex model, institutions can better address the diverse needs of students, ensuring no one is left behind in their educational journey.
