A Reconfigurable and Dual Functional On-Board Battery Charger For Electric Vehicles

The proposed work is an on-board electric vehicle charger featuring an interleaved totem-pole power factor correction (ITPFC) converter and a high-power isolated (HPI) DC-DC converter. The proposed charger operates in two modes, namely grid-connected mode (GCM) and driving mode (DM). In GCM, the ITPFC converter, together with the DC-DC converter, will charge the main battery. In DM, the ITPFC converter is reconfigured to an interleaved buck converter to charge the auxiliary battery of the electric vehicle from the main battery. This eliminates the need for an extra isolated DC-DC converter in the traditional chargers to charge the auxiliary loads, and the proposed charger configuration has fewer components. Thus, the on-board charger is cost effective with minimal consumption of the vehicles’ internal space. The charger offers isolation for the main battery in GCM and to the auxiliary battery in DM. Also, the back-end DC-DC converter has a soft-switching capability that improves the output power density and enhances the overall efficiency of the charger. The proposed on-board charger is designed for 7.2kW. This paper demonstrates the operation of charger in GCM and DM accompanied by the MATLAB results.
