Design of Compact Eight Element Dual-Band MIMO Antenna for 5G Smartphones

The article presents an eight-port dual-band MIMO antenna for 5G smartphones. The proposed antenna design includes a mainboard and two sideboard substrates, with antenna elements placed on the sideboards. There are four elements equally spaced on each side. The design is developed on an FR4 substrate with a relative permittivity of 4.4 and a dielectric loss tangent(δ) = 0.025. The total dimensions of the mainboard are 150×75mm², and the sideboard dimensions are 150×7mm². The elements are fed by a microstrip feedline with an SMA connector, covering dual bands: 3.4 GHz – 3.6 GHz and 4.5 GHz – 5.0 GHz, with bandwidths of 200 MHz and 500 MHz, respectively. The MIMO antenna is fabricated, and essential results such as S-parameters, radiation patterns, gain, co-polar and cross-polar plots, ECC, and channel capacity are measured and show good agreement with the simulation results.
