The Impact of Redundancy on Resource Utilization in Vehicular Clouds

Cloud computing has grown in its application and prevalence through the years, providing resources that would have otherwise limited use. Building upon the success of conventional cloud computing, the concept of vehicular clouds was introduced. Vehicular clouds rely on groups of vehicles whose corporate computing, sensing, communication, and physical resources can be coordinated and dynamically allocated to authorized users. Vehicular clouds differ from conventional cloud computing by employing untapped resources with distributed ownership. In a vehicular cloud, nodes are not available consistently due to random arrival and departure of vehicles. This creates a variable operating environment in which effectively assigning and completing assigned jobs becomes difficult. To address this challenge, we propose algorithms that incorporate redundancy. In this work, we provide a comparative resource utilization analysis by applying different algorithms with redundant and non-redundant implementations.
