Malicious Social Bot Detection in Twitter: A Review

The Online social networks (OSN) popularity and use increases recently. Due to their immense popularity across a wide range of users, hackers use this platform to spread fake news, promotion of specific ideas and products using bots. Therefore, early detection of bots in social media is very essential. In this paper we do a comprehensive review of literature related to malicious bot detection techniques. We classify detection strategies according to their basic concepts, such as machine learning, network analysis, natural language processing, and behavior-based approaches. Furthermore, we assess each technique's strengths, limitations, and effectiveness. Additionally, we highlight stat-of-the art methodology used in the field of malicious social bot detection and future direction.
