The U.S.A. Approach to Regulation of ISM Equipment

The interference potential of Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) equipment is regulated in the United States by the Federal Communications Commission under Part 18 of its Rules. The regulations set forth technical standards for ISM equipment together with previsions for requiring that interference be corrected if it should occur. The paper discusses USA experiences and the regulatory philosophy in controlling the interference potential of ISM equipment. Future regulatory trends and international harmonizational of standards are also disucssed.
