Theories of Scattering from Wire Grid and Mesh Structures

This is a subject that has a long and illustrious history dating back to Lamb and Rayleigh in the last century. The subject can often be treated as a special case of the general theory of the "multiple scattering of waves". This paper deals specifically with structures characterized by wires thin in the sense that only axial currents play a significant role. Some of the implications of locating such periodic wire structures in the vicinity of various layered earth models will be also considered. This aspect of the subject, of course, is important in dealing with the design of grounding systems for antennas and related shielding problems.
