Aging and Corrosion of Aluminum Conductor Caused by Fireproof Mud in a Simulated Cable Trench

Fireproof mud, a commonly used material in the power and construction industries for sealing and plugging, can unexpectedly accelerate the aging and corrosion of aluminum cables when in direct contact. Despite its prevalent use, limited research has investigated the effects of fireproof mud on aluminum cables. This research focuses on the impact of fireproof mud on aluminum cables, whose application has not been given a comprehensive study despite being widely used in the power as well as construction sectors. By conducting a 2000-hour experimental study in a simulated cable trench, examining the impact of water-based, oil-based, and sealant fire mud on aluminum cables under multiple stress conditions. A comprehensive assessment framework, including visual inspections, electrical insulation resistance measurements, Conductor Insulation Resistance and physical mass loss calculations. Furthermore, a recommendation procedure for corrosion prevention is presented, providing guidelines for enhancing the durability and reliability of electrical infrastructure.
