AC Loss Comparison of HTS Synchronous Motors With Different Topologies for Ship Propulsion Application

With the continuous advancement of high temperature superconducting (HTS) technology, various superconducting devices have emerged, including HTS synchronous motors. In comparison to traditional permanent magnet synchronous motors, these HTS motors exhibit a significant characteristic of high air-gap flux density. However, the high magnetic load can result in excessive AC loss and potential quenching of the superconducting windings. To further investigate the feasibility of utilizing superconducting motors in low-speed direct drive applications, it is essential to examine the loss characteristics of these motors under different topologies in order to identify a lower loss design. This study employs a two-dimensional motor model based on T-A formulation to assess the AC loss and related parameters of HTS synchronous motors with varying topologies. The analysis findings demonstrate that the novel half-toothed stator and rotor topology proposed herein effectively mitigates AC losses in the field winding.
