Implementing a High-Frequency Digital SMPS with Microcontroller Hardware Accelerator

This paper introduces a cost-effective approach to implementing high-frequency current controllers within a buck circuit, using a general-purpose microcontroller (MCU), the STM32G474RB. By leveraging its built-in filter math accelerator (FMAC), a type II compensator is deployed to achieve a current control frequency of 250kHz. This method reduces system size and cost while maintaining high efficiency, making it a viable alternative to more expensive digital signal processor (DSP) and field-programmable gate array (FPGA) solutions. The proposed design is validated through hardware implementation, showcasing its potential for advancing switch mode power supply (SMPS) performance.
