Power Integrity Analysis of a Power Line Between a DDR4 Memory and a Controller

Power integrity (PI) is a highly debated topic in the electronics industry as it can exhibit a substantial range of problems, each with its unique causes and solutions. The field of PI encompasses everything from voltage regulator modules to on-die capacitance and on-die core power rails. In this paper, an analysis on PI of a power rail by running DC drop and decoupling simulations using the HyperLynx was performed. Using this tool, the placement and size of the decoupling capacitors was performed. The DC drop simulations for different board temperatures were done to obtain all the DC drop characteristics of the proposed design. For the decoupling simulation the impedance properties of the designed power rail referencing a predetermined target impedance were obtained.
