Uncovering Common AI Challenges Across Industrial Domains in the Transition to Industry 5.0

AI adoption in industrial applications has been slower than analysts expected due to the lack of best practices and industrial-grade solutions. In response, the Artificial Intelligence in Manufacturing leading to Sustainability and Industry 5.0 (AIMS5.0) project introduces 20 use cases from world-renowned companies, providing an opportunity to thoroughly analyze the challenges of implementing AI in industrial settings. This paper presents the first taxonomy of AI adoption challenges, organized by AI domains across the use cases, highlighting issues such as data collection, algorithmic limitations, and other deficiencies in current solutions. Based on these challenges, we outline the AIMS5.0 AI Toolbox, which offers various solutions to address them, as detailed in the paper. The challenges are validated through two sample, mature use cases, demonstrating how they manifest in different industrial applications.
