Overview on Standards Related to the Safety and Compliance of Mobile Wireless Transmitters

An overview of safety and compliance standards that apply to radio-frequency (RF) emitters, with particular emphasis to those involving mobile communication devices and their infrastructure, is provided. These standards establish exposure and emission limits that assure the safe use of these devices with respect to human exposure limits and their electromagnetic compatibility with other electronics, as well as the recommended techniques to determine compliance with exposure and emission limits. The similarities and the most significant differences among the various standards are outlined, and the need for and relevance of standards harmonization efforts at national and international level is addressed.
