Improving the Point-of-Sale Operations of the Mariano Marcos State University Through the Integration of Portable Self-Service Kiosk

This paper presents the development and implementation of a portable self-service kiosk system at Mariano Marcos State University, designed to enhance the point-of-sale experience in campus canteens. Long wait times during checkout have been identified as a significant issue affecting customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. The proposed system leverages barcode scanning and QR code technology to streamline the ordering and payment process, thereby reducing congestion and wait times. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study involved qualitative interviews with cashiers and consumers to identify challenges and requirements, followed by quantitative analysis of user acceptance testing results. The agile development methodology was utilized to design, test, and deploy the system, ensuring alignment with user needs throughout the development process. The system incorporates features such as product filtering, canteen selection, notification systems, and consumption pattern-based recommendations. Preliminary results indicate strong user acceptance and satisfaction across four key categories: functionality, usability, efficiency, and portability. The overall grand mean of 4.89 out of 5 in user acceptance testing underscores the system's effectiveness in addressing the identified issues. This innovation not only improves the campus dining experience but also provides valuable data for ongoing service improvements, representing a significant step towards modernizing campus food services at Mariano Marcos State University.
