Analysis of the Wire Coupling under an Aperture Illuminated by an Incident Field by Means of a Topological Approach

Effects of electromagnetic perturbations such as high power radio-frequency pulses on large systems are investigated through simulations using the electromagnetic topology method. This paper shows a new technique to analyze the transfer function used in characterizing aperture interactions with internal circuitry of a semi- shielded system. The transfer function is modeled by using a transmission line as a radiating antenna generating the source coupling on multi-conductor lines connecting critical elements. Both lightning and electromagnetic pulses were used as sources of external perturbations in the analysis. The simulation and analysis were performed using the state of the art computer code which is based on electromagnetic topology concept, having cable network as its application domain. The results compare well with experiments. Analysis shows that the cable excitations due to effects of external disturbances depend on the cable location and terminating impedances.
