EMC IC Measurements in Design for Automotive Electronic Unit

Objective of this paper is to present that ElectroMagnetic Compatibility (E.M.C.) measurements on integrated circuits (IC) could be used to design electronics units (EU) for automotive applications. Approach is based on definition of an EMC IC specification using IC EMC measurement method defined in IEC 47A committee. In first part, needs of IC users are presented. In order to reach requirements of automotive systems and have also low design costs, it's become necessary for electronics designers to specify and choice IC with EMC criteria. A second part presents EMC measurement methods available at IC level to characterize EMC behaviour of IC. Third part presents specification and test method used to design automotive applications. Fourth part proposes a design matrix which permits to link IC EMC performances to EU EMC requirements. That matrix give a preliminary EMC design for EU designer.
