Ultrasound Breast Phantom for Breast Biopsy Training

Ultrasound-guided breast biopsy is an important part of the examination chain for breast cancer. However, adequate training for such interventions is limited. This work focuses on creating an anthropomorphic breast phantom suitable for ultrasound-guided intervention training. For this purpose, a computer model of a breast was generated, which was subsequently converted to an STL file and 3D printed using a fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printer. The 3D-printed breast model was utilized as a mold for constructing the phantom, which is primarily made from soft and flexible silicone rubber. Additionally, the phantom includes several tumor entities. An experienced radiologist evaluated the breast phantom. Although the depth of ultrasound penetration was limited, the core-needle biopsy test proved promising as well as the visual and tactile simulation. Furthermore, the manufacturing costs can be considered low.
