CT Scanning of an Object Moving Along a Cyclic Trajectory Using a Pulsed X-Ray Source

The paper presents the results of an experiment on CT scanning of a cyclically moving object. The study aims to compare the quality of CT images for stationary and moving objects. To verify the effectiveness of the method, a prototype was chosen-a system with a moving piston in a cylinder, manufactured using a 3D printer. Unlike common methods for obtaining X-ray images of moving objects, which use high-frame-rate detectors, this study employs a detector that accumulates the signal for an extended period, while the short duration of the X-ray pulse ensures image acquisition without blurring. A method is proposed that utilizes a pulsed X-ray source synchronized with the object's movement, allowing for the acquisition of CT images of objects moving at high speeds. The pulsed X-ray source has the following characteristics: the pulse voltage reaches 120 kV, the pulse current reaches 220 A, the duration of the current pulse at half-height is approximately 30 ns, corresponding to the duration of X-ray emission, and the focal spot diameter is 1.2 mm. Synchronization of the object's position and radiation generation is ensured by a Hall sensor. The results of this study have potential applications in medicine, scientific research, and industry.
