Archimedes Optimization Based Proportional Resonant Control of Active Arc Suppression Device in a Resonant Grounded Distribution System

This research study aims to enhance the performance of the arc suppression device (ASD) in the resonant grounded distribution system (RGDS). To achieve this, in this research work, a voltage-controlled ASD is proposed using a physics-inspired Archimedes optimization algorithm (AOA) based proportional resonant (PR) controller. This robust optimization technique optimizes the gain of the PR controller at a rapid convergence speed and maintains a good trade-off between exploration and exploitation. The performance of the proposed AOA-optimized PR controller is thoroughly evaluated under various fault impedances and with the comparison of AOA-PI, particle swarm optimization (PSO) based proportional-integral (PI), and PR controllers. The proposed ASD with an AOA-optimized PR control scheme substantially reduces the fault voltage to 24.77 V, 24.82 V, and 26.20 V for the fault resistances of $\boldsymbol{250}\ \Omega, \ \boldsymbol{16}\ k\Omega$ and $\boldsymbol{26}\ k\Omega$, respectively. These results represent a significant improvement compared to the performance of the other controllers examined in this research as well as from the existing literature.
