Potential, Challenges and Outlook Of Solid State Battery

Solid state battery is a promising battery technology. It is projected to replace the lithium-ion batteries in the next decade if its critical challenges will be well addressed. The electrodes used in this technology is solid, replacing the liquid electrolyte used in lithium-ion batteries. This paper aims at presenting the state of art of solid-state battery, including its main characteristic, working principle, and manufacturing process. The main benefits and the different challenges facing the wider implementation are discussed in this paper. Solid state battery technology has many benefits compared to lithiumion battery, including higher energy density, improved safety, fast charging time, longer lifetime, and broader working temperatures. Its main challenges are scalability, scarcity of materials used in its manufacturing, recycling difficulties, interface problem, infrastructure, and high manufacturing cost. It is expected that the shifting to mass manufacturing of solid-state batteries will be after 2030.
