The Connector Pin Voltage of a Shielded Cable Immersed in a Radiation Field

In this paper we discuss the relation between cable shield design, radiation fields, and system susceptibility/emissivity. This discussion leads to the concept of Critical Transfer Impedance, from which connector pin voltages can be calculated. We show how plots of Critical Transfer Impedance can be made, knowing the amplitude of the radiation field and the susceptibility/emissivity thresholds for the system under test. We then show how Critical Transfer Impedance plots can be overlain on surface transfer impedance plots for cable shields, to determine the shield construction required to prevent system failure in the surrounding radiation field.
