Application of a Broadband Measuring Line in Field Immunity Testing

This paper deals with the application of guided wave devices for the determination of the performance degradation of small electronic devices irradiated by electromagnetic (EM) waves. Pocket calculators, digital watches and heart pacemakers have been exposed to continuous wave and impulse modulated nearly homogeneous EM. fields in a shielded strip transmission line. A brief survey is given of common sources of radiated EM energy. Typical measuring errors of the method used are caused by the impedance loading effect when the device under test (DUT) is inserted in the cell and by the enhancement of the field above the DUT. Graphs are given for a first order estimate of these errors.
