High Voltage DC-DC Converter for Safety Beacons

This paper presents the implementation of a high voltage DC-DC converter tailored for powering circuits that operate at relative high voltages (HVs) but require low current consumption. These kinds of circuits, such as LED beacons, are commonly used in various industries including automotive, biomedical, and aerospace, where high-power and HV circuit testing is essential. The device under test (DUT), which can be another DC-DC converter, a charger or anything else, is supplied with a very HV, which could damage the beacon or expose the operator. Safety is a priority during testing. To address this, a robust DC-DC converter was developed to convert high input voltages, from various DUTs, into a stable output voltage suitable for low-current, lower-voltage applications, such as a LED beacon. The compact design of the converter makes it ideal for integration into testing environments without adding clutter and occupying space. It then plays a key role in ensuring safety in every test laboratory, contributing to a more secure testing process. The theoretical design is presented and then confirmed by simulation. In the end, the prototype of the proposed final product is tested, assuring correct operation.
