Wave Powered Desalination Systems - Recent Developments

In remote offshore communities in discrete islands, the availability of potable water poses significant challenges. Several efforts are there to give them water in sustainable ways. Among the renewable energy resources, marine energy is the one that is a viable solution to generate or produce the needs of the potable water demands. The islands are surrounded by vast ocean water; many have abundant access to ocean wave energy sources nearby. This review paper explores the potential methods of wave-powered based desalination technologies. A review of existing systems with ample patents, research articles, and laboratory experiments have been conducted on marine energy systems. The main objective is to explore the existing systems and devices worldwide, identify suitable wave energy devices for Indian islands and seashore communities to maximize desalinated water production in island and seashore communities, and identify and determine the optimal specific energy consumption rates. Furthermore, this paper explores other advanced renewable technologies in research and their integration with desalination systems. Wave-powered desalination is still being researched to provide optimal solutions for integrating desalination units. This will highlight the technological advancements of existing systems and the challenges wave-powered desalination systems face.
