Using Digital Transformation Maturity Models in Project Design and Planning

A Digital Transformation (DT) journey can be organised in a project or a sequence of projects. Such a DT project (DTP) is used as a tool for reaching a specific trans-formation step or sequence of transformation steps. To assess where the project starts (AS-IS situation) and which goal it should achieve (TO-BE situation), it must be embedded into a DT roadmap. Maturity models help to assess where a transfor-mation stands to a bigger picture, e.g., DT maturity models (DTMM) provide a stepwise DT path with maturity levels as starting points, goals, and milestones. This contribution assesses how DTMMs can be used for the design of DTPs. Based on a literature review, the current understanding of DTPs and DTMMs is analysed. A generic process for assessing the AS-IS and TO-BE situations and the respective project design is presented. Furthermore, the results of a use case and an evaluation in an expert workshop are presented and discussed.
