Evaluation of Methods of Measuring Digital IC Terminal Output

This paper describes an accurate way of evaluating methods of measuring the output from the terminals of a digital integrated circuit (IC). The outputs from the terminals are used as an indicator of the electromagnetic interference (EMI) generated by the IC. We use the impedance characteristics and a conversion coefficient to evaluate such methods. These characteristics can be accurately derived from the S-parameters, even for high frequencies, by using a network analyzer. We can therefore evaluate methods of measuring the outputs from ICs in the high-frequency range, above 1 GHz. Such evaluation may improve the methods used to measure the terminal outputs of a digital integrated circuit.
