Proposal of a Configuration for the Detector Magnet of the ALICE 3 Experiment at the LHC

In the LS4 upgrade of the LHC, one planned enhancement is the conversion of the ALICE detector magnet from a resistive 0.5T magnet to a superconducting solenoid with a field strength of 1 to 2T. Transitioning to a superconducting magnet will reduce power consumption from the current 8 MW to approximately 0.5 MW. Researchers are also exploring the possibility of integrating a dipole component, which would significantly improve momentum resolution at low emission angles, thereby enhancing particle detection performance and accuracy. Canted cosine theta (CCT) windings, often used in the construction of accelerator magnets, can be adapted for detector magnets to introduce a dipole component alongside the conventional solenoid field. This contribution presents preliminary magnetic designs for the ALICE 3 solenoid and discusses the possibility of using these innovative techniques for magnets of this size, presenting the first designs with and without a dipole component.
