Against Which Electromagnetic Phenomena Should Electronic Devices be Immune?

Beginning Jan. 1, 1996, in the European Community all electrical and electronic devices have to fulfill both legal emission and immunity requirements, which are, that’s the ideal case, stated in generic or product standards. Here the question arises: "Is it is realy necessary to claim for immunity testing for devices which never failed in their applications?" The paper deals with - some critical remarks upon the sense of the European directive - the new structure of EMC standards - the immunity series IEC 1000-4-x, and - a proposal of a product familiy standard for electrical equipment for measurement control and laboratory use. Furthermore the papers of the session ’EMC immunity testing’ will be reviewed.
