Developments in Emission and Immunity Testing

This paper will review recent trends in making radiated and conducted emission and immunity measurements. Alternate radiated emission measurement will be especially covered in this session and the results compared with measurements made using common test facilities such as open area test sites (OATS) and absorber lined test chambers. These alternate techniques include: a) measuring emissions using monopole antennas, b) predicting radiated emissions based on numerical simulation of the radiating source, c) estimating radiated emissions by first measuring the magnetic near-field of the source, and d) using current probes to predict radiated emissions based on currents on cables attached to equipment under test. For radiated immunity tests, alternates investigated in this session include: a) a new procedure for calibrating the test field, b) the use of a reverberating chamber from a theoretical perspective and c) the use of a reverberating chamber to test for both the radiated emissions and immunity of an entire automotive vehicle. Finally, reference will be made to the present international standards which are most applied for both emission and immunity measurements. In particular, the generic standards as specified in CENELEC will be described, especially since those on emissions are now approved as IEC standards [1,2].
