Theoretical and Experimental Determination of the Shielding Effectiveness of Test Enclosures

In this paper, the shielding effectiveness (SE) of enclosures is characterized experimentally as well as theoretically. First, an accurate measurement set-up is developed, enabling SE measurements in an anechoic chamber, at 3 meters from the DUT (Device Under Test). Secondly, full-wave simulations are performed, thus allowing an accurate comparison between measured and simulated results. A very good correspondence is obtained between experimental and theoretical results, with a discrepancy of less than 5 dB (for frequencies below the first resonance frequency of the enclosure). Also the resonance effects inside the box are efficiently predicted by the simulation tool.
