Modeling and Control of a Parallel Active Filter Considering Components Losses

The increasing use of non-linear loads has raised concerns about disturbances in electrical networks. This paper examines the rise of parallel active filters (PAFs) in improving electrical power quality in response to the increase of this loads. To better approximate the real system, a loss estimation loop for semiconductor components was introduced. Harmonic current identification based on the instantaneous power method allows for the calculation of reference currents for the modulated hysteresis control of the PAF. Taking losses into account, the PAF is modeled and investigated with a nonlinear load using MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation results demonstrate the filter's effectiveness in attenuating harmonics and the influence of losses on the fundamental value of the current it delivers.
