PID Control Based on PSO for a Grid Connected Photovoltaic System Using a Three-Phase Voltage Source Inverter

This article presents active and reactive control for a photovoltaic (PV) system connected to the grid based on designing and tuning a proportional-integral-derivative PID controller using a practical swarm optimization technique PSO. The (PV) system is connected to the grid utility by a three-phase voltage source inverter through an LCL filter to enhance the energy quality. Two controllers are used, a conventional proportional integral PI and a PID based on the PSO optimization technique (PID-PSO). The two controllers depend on the computation of instantaneous active and reactive powers from the voltage and current grid. The purpose of these controllers is to generate a control law that enables the PV system to operate at the desired performances. These controllers also guarantee the dynamic stability of the PV system in the presence of sudden irradiance changes on the PV generator and efficiently track the active power. The simulation results generated with MATLAB-Simulink reveal that the PID-PSO technique has superior dynamic performance regarding convergence time and overshoot compared to the standard PI controller.
