Mitigation of Voltage Sag & Swell Using Intelligent Control-Based Dynamic Voltage Restorer

This paper introduces an advanced Dynamic Voltage Restorer controller designed to address voltage fluctuations within the system, specifically voltage sags and swells. The proposed DVR controller relies on power electronics and functions as a voltage source converter, capable of delivering controllable three-phase voltage output while mitigating THD on the load side. The DVR is integrated into the grid in a series configuration, promptly rectifying voltage disturbances and restoring load voltage to fault conditions. The key power quality issues addressed in the grid system encompass voltage sags/swells, harmonics, frequency variations, and reactive power generation. In this study, non-linear loads are deliberately employed to induce power quality challenges such as sag/swell and harmonics. To measure sag/swell voltage parameters and total harmonic values, the paper presents the development of conventional PID controllers, Artificial Neural Networks, and Fuzzy-PID controllers. The proposed system is implemented and simulated using the MATLAB/SIMULINK platform, and a hardware prototype model is constructed utilizing the PIC16F877A microcontroller. Subsequently, a comprehensive analysis of all pertinent parameters is conducted.
