A Comprehensive Review of Dimmable Circuits for Lighting Applications: Technologies, Design Considerations, and Performance Evaluation

The evolution of lighting technology has significantly advanced with the integration of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), offering superior energy efficiency, extended operational life, and minimal heat generation compared to traditional lighting sources. Dimming capability is a critical feature that enhances the versatility and functionality of LED lighting systems across various applications. This paper provides an in-depth review of dimmable circuits specifically designed for LED lighting, focusing on the latest technologies, key design considerations, and performance metrics.The review encompasses four primary dimming techniques: phase-cut dimming, pulse width modulation (PWM) dimming, analog dimming, and digital dimming. Each method is evaluated based on its operational principles, advantages, and limitations. By studying and understanding the literature’s available, this paper brings out in depth details of various dimming techniques and contributes to advancement in the field of LED lighting technology.
