Design and Implementation of Solar-Powered Bi-Directional Wireless Charging System for Electric Bicycle

Transport is a fundamental requirement of modern life. Petrol or diesel vehicles are highly polluting and are being quickly replaced by fully electric vehicles (EV). However, grid supply is utilized to charge the EV, which indirectly lagging in the mitigation of harmful gas emission. Which is overcome by employing renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic power generation system, wind energy conversion system, etc., to charge Electric Vehicles (EV). Charging EV with solar provides a sustainable future for transportation. Instead of plugin charging method, wireless charging methods were employed due to its convenience and durability. Main drawback in wireless charging system is reduction of transfer efficiency due to misalignment. In this article LLC compensated resonant wireless power transfer is employed for charging EV and achieved 92.1% of power transfer efficiency with bidirectional power flow for grid integration. The performance of this wireless charging system is simulated using MATLAB Simulink platform, an operation is verified in both forward and reverse power flow. The simulation results were validated with the 500 W hardware prototype wireless charging system for electric bicycle with 24V, 10 Ah li-ion battery.
