Development and Integration of a Dual-Mode Drone-Rover System for Enhanced Search and Rescue Operations

The increasing frequency of natural and man-made disasters has highlighted the need for innovative solutions to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of rescue operations. This research focuses on the development and deployment of drones specifically designed to assist rescue services. This research presents a novel system comprising two key components: a drone for aerial surveillance and a multifunctional rover. The drone equipped with an X-ray camera could capture images to aid a human detection program, ensuring no victim is overlooked behind obstructions. The rover serves a dual purpose: it approaches victims to reassure them that help is on the way and assesses their health status by measuring heart rate using photoplethysmography (PPG). The system is designed with an innovative attach-and-detach mechanism controlled by a magnetic switch, allowing the drone and rover to operate both independently and in tandem, enhancing the overall search effectiveness. This approach offers a comprehensive solution to ensure thorough and timely rescue operations in complex and challenging environments.
