Performance Evaluation of DC-DC Buck Converter with RC Snubber Circuit Under Ideal and Non-Ideal Conditions

The presence of the parasitic components in dc-de power converter causes audio noise, disturbing electromagnetic interfacing, and ringing on the waveform. These problems can be solved by using higher switching frequency to the switches or by placing a protection circuit such as using a series Resistor-Capacitor (RC) circuit to overcome the audio noise and lower the tensions to a safe level. This paper aimed to evaluate the performance of the dc-dc buck converter at the steady-state considering ideal and non-ideal conditions with aided protection RC circuit. The converter operation covers on the boundary condition, Continuous Current Mode (CCM), and Discontinuous Current Mode (DCM). The converter's performance with and without the protection circuit were evaluated. Results showed that the ideal converter successfully conducts in the boundary, CCM, and DCM and for non-ideal analysis, the higher the drain-source voltage $(\mathrm{V}_{\text{ds}})$ in the MOSFET, the lower efficiency. In addition, the lower input voltage, the converter's efficiency tends to decrease. Designing a snubber circuit manages to correct the spike in the drain current waveform of the converter, and the losses tend to be improved in range of 33% to 53% during the turnoff of the converter.
