Designing An Advanced Hybrid Adapter and Battery Charger With Digital Control Loop and Dynamic Mode Selection

Modern adapters and battery chargers are designed to be efficient, compact, and user-friendly. This paper presents design of an advanced hybrid adapter (Mode1) and battery charger (Mode2) with digital control loop and dynamic mode selection implemented using microcontroller. The hybrid adapter and battery charger are designed with unique feature of dynamically selectable mode of operation enabling a single converter to perform as an adapter or a battery charger based on mode selected. The design is MIL-STD-461F qualified. The proposed design is implemented with front-end single phase boost Power Factor Correction (PFC) to operate over wide range of AC input voltage. The power converter is realized with Half-Bridge topology. With the proposed approach an overall efficiency of $\mathbf{9 2 \%}$ is achieved for the converter.
