Demonstration of 5G NTN Solution based on O-RAN Architecture

As part of 3GPP Release-18 and beyond there is also evolution being planned for Satellite networks based on 5G network architecture. Ubiquitous networks based on Terrestrial Networks (TN), Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) is also aligned as one of the visions for 6G based Network architecture. There are also multiple deployment options being explored like Transparent mode, Semi-regenerative mode and Regenerative mode.The demo provides the realization of 5G RAN NTN based solution for FR1 or FR2 frequency bands compliant with 3GPP specifications and also aligned with O-RAN architecture. It shows 5G RAN NTN framework that supports interfaces towards RIC & SMO (with O1/E2 enhanced to support NTN), and how NTN specific xApps/rApps can be onboarded to the RIC platform (especially for use-cases like beam management, load balancing, traffic steering).The demo includes 2 type of deployment options (a) end-to-end NTN call for Transparent mode for FR1/NTN where 5G NTN RAN is deployed on Ground along with 5G Core Network (b) Semi-regenerative mode for FR2/NTN where 5G NTN CU in on Ground and 5G NTN DU running on Payload and verified in PHY by-pass mode with SMO that shall be used for Control and configuration of 5G NTN RAN.
