MAIDScan, a new acoustic 2D and 3D flaw detection system

Scanning A Scanning Acoustic Microscope (SAM) has been developed to detect flaws using ultrasound techniques. The mechatronic system automatically scans the flat surface of a product and collects A-scan type ultrasound data into a 3D array. This array can be used for data evaluation, presenting any 2D slices where material flaws appear. A 3D rotational presentation makes it easy to identify volumetric flaws within materials. In developing this new measuring device, we introduced new methods and features compared to our earlier systems, enabling us to efficiently detect defects in various tasks. We present the results of flaw detection across different applications and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using the Front Surface Follower. Additionally, we developed an effective procedure to produce slide-series, enhancing the effectiveness of flaw detection. The new, faster system allows us to use it not only for small-sized objects but also for larger ones up to 400mm in size.
