Single-Use Plastics: The Life and Afterlife of Sachets in the Philippines

The Philippines ranks as the world's third-largest plastic polluter, a consequence of widespread consumerism and lack of funding and initiative by succeeding presidents in the establishment of new waste management policies. Sachet plastic, sold in “sari-sari” stores due to its economic appeal and deep-rooted presence in Filipino culture, exacerbates the issue. The government established Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) for waste sorting and recycling to address waste issues. However, most MRFs struggle to recycle sachet plastic due to its complex composition, being made of polymers, metals, and paper. In addition to MRFs, informal businesses called “Junk shops” play a vital role in plastic collection, though they choose to avoid sachets due to their low economic value. Unfortunately, sachets not collected by MRFs or junk shops along the plastic stream end up in landfills and dumpsites, posing health risks, particularly for low-income Filipino communities. This article delves into the life cycle of sachet plastic, from manufacturing to its environmental impact, shedding light on the challenges and implications for Filipino society. We also expand on potential solutions and future outcomes that can act as a beacon of hope for the Philippines.
