Method of Online Control of Detonation Properties of Hydrocarbon Fuels

In recent years, issues of the quality and use of motor gasoline have acquired a completely new meaning and are on a par with the most important problems on the solution of which technical progress and economic development depend. Requirements for the quality of motor gasoline are growing every year and for new engines it is necessary to develop new types with improved performance characteristics. The main requirement for motor gasoline is optimal detonation resistance, i.e. a parameter characterizing the ability of a fuel to resist self-ignition during compression. This is the most important quantitative characteristic of fuel, on the basis of which its grade and applicability in engines of a particular design are determined. For each type of engine, it is necessary to select gasoline that ensures knock-free operation in all modes. Today, for the rapid determination of the detonation properties of motor fuels, the most common are physicochemical methods that connect the occurrence of chemical reactions of the fuels under study with the accompanying physical effects. This article discusses the possibility of using a cold-flame combustion method based on the oxidation reaction of fuel with an oxygen-containing gas, as well as measuring one of the physical effects accompanying the reaction, the magnitude of which is proportional to the detonation properties of this fuel. Research of this method based on the use of a new oxidizer – one of the allotropic modifications of oxygen – ozone – opens up new opportunities for determining the quality of hydrocarbon fuels. From the point of view of improving the quality of products, with a simultaneous increase in the latter, the study of a method based on the reaction of fuel with a specific oxidizer (ozone) obtained directly from the ambient air is of interest, and the issue of developing means of its implementation is relevant.
