Analysis of Co-viewing with Virtual Agent Towards Affectively Immersive Interaction in Virtual Spaces

This study investigates how co-viewing with agents in virtual spaces impacts user experiences and perceptions. Advances in virtual reality (VR) technology have enabled more immersive and natural interactions in virtual environments. Nonverbal communication plays a significant role in affectively immersive experiences for users. In our pilot study, participants co-viewed a comedy show with programmed agents that exhibited laughter and facial expressions. While overall statistical analysis showed no significant difference in viewing experiences with or without agents, some participants reported enhanced engagement and enjoyment when coviewing with agents. Insights from participants highlight the importance of individual preferences, agent design, and relationship-building to improve social VR systems.
